Bhubaneswar: Governor and chancellor of universities, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, urged universities to transform into globally competitive, socially responsible, and technologically advanced institutions while staying grounded in Indian values. During the inauguration of the two-day vice-chancellors’ conference on Sunday, he highlighted that universities serve as centers of knowledge, innovation, and leadership, bearing a significant responsibility in nation-building.
He called attention to Odisha’s rich tribal heritage, encouraging universities to engage in meaningful research on indigenous knowledge systems, tribal traditions, and cultural preservation. The governor informed attendees that publications documenting Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), prepared by the tribal cell of Lok Bhavan, would be made available to universities to aid academic study and research initiatives.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, speaking at the event, noted that the state government has allocated 13.7% of its 2026-27 budget for educational development. “The government has decided to establish new universities in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, and Bhadrak, with financial provisions included in the budget. Additionally, new engineering colleges will be set up in Paradip and Balangir, along with two new Krushi Mahavidyalayas in Mayurbhanj and Balangir,” the CM stated.
Discussions at the conference covered various topics, including the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020, which was initiated in the state in August 2024; the inclusion of students in NCC, Bharat Scouts and Guides; and the apprenticeship embedded degree program at the undergraduate level.
