The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted significant rainfall in western and northern regions of Odisha this Sunday, with other areas likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds as monsoon conditions strengthen throughout the state.
The Regional Meteorological Centre based in Bhubaneswar has identified seven districts—Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Nuapada—as likely to receive between 7 cm and 11 cm of heavy rainfall within the next 24 hours.
A yellow alert has been issued for 15 districts, warning residents of potential thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rain. Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant, particularly in regions susceptible to waterlogging and flash floods.
In particular, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh are expected to experience the heaviest rainfall, which could disrupt daily life in certain areas.
The IMD also noted that wind speeds could reach 30-40 kmph during thunderstorms, raising concerns about possible damage to temporary structures, uprooted weak trees, and interruptions to outdoor activities.
In light of these forecasts, the weather department has provided the following recommendations for residents:
- Avoid seeking shelter under trees when thunderstorms occur.
- Stay indoors during instances of lightning and strong winds.
- Keep informed by following updates and advisories from local authorities.
- Exercise caution when traveling, especially in low-lying and flooded areas.
This warning comes as regions in Odisha are already experiencing monsoon showers, with heavy rains impacting daily activities during the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities.
