Authorities in Odisha have extended school and college holidays in Kalahandi and Sambalpur districts as the heatwave persists in the state.
In Kalahandi, the district administration announced that schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres will remain closed from April 22 until further notice. Officials confirmed that examinations for Classes 5 and 8 will continue in the morning between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. to minimize exposure to extreme heat.
Similarly, Sambalpur district has extended holidays for schools until April 24. The district collector issued the directive, citing rising temperatures and the necessity to safeguard students.
The prolonged heatwave has disrupted academic schedules across western Odisha. Several districts had already declared closures earlier this week, and the latest extensions reflect deteriorating conditions. Parents and teachers welcomed the decision, emphasizing the importance of protecting children from heat-related illnesses.
Meteorologists have predicted that temperatures will remain elevated until April 25, with no immediate relief in sight. Jharsuguda, Titilagarh, and Balangir recorded temperatures exceeding 42°C, while other districts hovered around 40°C.
The state government has urged residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours and to stay hydrated. Officials assured that examinations and academic activities will be rescheduled once conditions improve.
