A tragic road accident claimed the life of Surjyakant Mohanty while he was travelling to the Gupteswar Mahadev shrine with his childhood friend Sudhir Nayak and Sudhir’s wife Dharitri Rath.
Surjyakant, an employee of Nalco at Damanjodi, had come to Jharsuguda for his father’s death anniversary. He met Sudhir, who works as an engineer in Nagpur, and decided to visit the Gupteswar temple together. On Monday afternoon, the trio set out in Surjyakant’s car.
Near Mandikijharan under Ramgiri police limits, the vehicle lost balance and rammed into a roadside tree. Surjyakant, who was driving, got trapped inside the mangled car. Local residents and Ramgiri police rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. They cut open the car doors and pulled him out.
Doctors at Baipariguda hospital declared Surjyakant dead. His body was later handed over to family members after the post-mortem. Sudhir and Dharitri sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Jeypore district hospital for treatment.
