Jamshedpur: Rail connectivity in the industrial hub of Jamshedpur is poised for a significant upgrade, with South Eastern Railway aiming for the commissioning of the third railway line between Tatanagar and Adityapur by September 2026.
Third-line work enters final phase
As per official railway records, the third-line section between Salgajhari East and West Cabin (Level Crossing No. 139) has been completed and is operational. The remaining stretch from Salgajhari West Cabin to Adityapur, which passes through the Tatanagar station area, is currently under construction.
Railway officials reported that the work is progressing rapidly and has been given a time-bound completion target of September 2026. Once operational, the additional line is expected to alleviate congestion on one of the region’s busiest rail corridors.
Boost for passenger and freight movement
The completion of the third railway line is anticipated to significantly enhance operational efficiency within the Tatanagar Railway Division. Railway authorities believe the project will minimize delays for both passenger and freight trains while increasing the overall capacity of the route.
The new line will also offer greater flexibility in train operations, especially during peak traffic periods, ensuring smoother train movement through the Tatanagar-Adityapur section.
Kharagpur-Jharsuguda fourth-line project gets special status
In another significant development, the Railways has granted ‘Special Railway Project’ status to the ambitious Kharagpur-Jharsuguda fourth railway line project. This special status was awarded on January 29, 2026, highlighting the corridor’s strategic importance for freight and passenger transport.
The project spans approximately 366.9 kilometers and entails an estimated investment of ₹5,089 crore. Railway officials noted that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently under review by the Railway Board for final approval.
Work progressing on multiple sections
Simultaneously, construction activities are progressing swiftly on various stretches of the Jharsuguda-Bargehi fourth-line project. Officials indicated that the expansion efforts are designed to meet the increasing rail traffic demands and strengthen the railway network across eastern India.
These projects are part of a broader strategy to enhance line capacity on some of South Eastern Railway’s most heavily utilized routes.
Industrial region to benefit
Industry stakeholders and rail users are expected to gain significantly from the infrastructure improvements. With enhanced line capacity and reduced congestion, freight transportation is likely to become faster and more efficient, fostering industrial growth across Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Railway officials are confident that the completion of the third and fourth-line projects will not only improve connectivity but also reinforce the region’s status as a key logistics and industrial hub in eastern India.
