SAMBALPUR: Industrial pollution has entered the political arena in western Odisha as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) criticizes the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the reopening of Shyam Metalics, which was closed due to alleged violations of pollution regulations.
Former minister and BJD district president Rohit Pujari accused the state government of favoring industrial interests at the expense of public health in the region, stating that the circumstances surrounding the plant’s reopening have raised significant concerns.
The industrial facility was sealed in two phases on April 6 and 7 after the Central Pollution Control Board reported environmental violations, but it was permitted to partially resume operations starting April 16.
Pujari questioned whether the emission and waste handling standards were fully met before the plant was allowed to reopen. “The government must explain on what basis the plant was allowed to restart. If the deficiencies persist, then the closure was nothing more than a drama,” he told reporters.
He also criticized the State Pollution Control Board for failing to take action despite having the authority to inspect, while central agencies identified lapses. “If such violations were evident to central authorities, it raises serious concerns about why the state agency remained silent,” he remarked.
Pujari noted that residents of Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts continue to suffer from the severe impacts of industrial pollution affecting air, water, and groundwater. He warned that unchecked pollution could have long-term consequences for public health and livelihoods.
Additionally, the BJD leader alleged that industries are encroaching on forest and water resource lands, including areas associated with the Hirakud Reservoir. He cautioned that the party would initiate protests if appropriate actions are not taken.
