Bhubaneswar, Jun 4 (UNI) Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has reinforced its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace at its Jharsuguda operations, with a strong focus on equitable opportunities and representation across its workforce.
In line with the Pride Month 2026 theme, “For All of us,” which emphasises creating spaces where individuals can live and work with dignity and authenticity, the company is advancing inclusive hiring practices, equitable workplace policies, and a culture of respect throughout its operations.
At its mega aluminium plant in Jharsuguda, women now account for 21 per cent of the workforce and are actively engaged in critical functions such as potline operations, maintenance, engineering, power operations, and leadership roles.
The company has also onboarded 19 transgender employees across various departments, including security, storekeeping, housekeeping, and maintenance.
These developments reflect a significant shift toward building a more representative workforce in an industry traditionally regarded as male-dominated.
To support transgender employees, Vedanta Aluminium has introduced progressive policies aimed at enhancing their quality of life and ensuring equal opportunities for professional growth.
These include a comprehensive gender affirmation policy that provides financial assistance of up to Rs 2 lakh for gender reassignment procedures, 30 days of paid leave, and access to medical guidance throughout the transition process.
Recognising the challenges often faced by LGBTQIA individuals in securing quality housing, the company has also arranged suitable accommodation facilities for transgender employees.
Highlighting the importance of workplace diversity, C. Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “A diverse workforce brings broader perspectives and strengthens decision-making. Inclusion is a core business priority that enables modern organisations to remain resilient and future-ready.
“We are committed to creating a workplace where every professional feels respected, valued, and empowered with equal opportunities to contribute to our shared success,” Chandru said.
Vedanta Aluminium has also been a pioneer in promoting women’s participation in core manufacturing roles. The Jharsuguda plant is home to India’s first all-women potline team and all-women locomotive team. More recently, it established Odisha’s first all-women power operations team, which manages a 135 MW power generation unit.
Further strengthening women’s leadership in critical operations, the company has formed Agnivahini, an all-women fire emergency response team comprising more than 100 trained members responsible for handling emergency situations across the plant.
Beyond its industrial operations, Vedanta Aluminium continues to drive social inclusion through community development initiatives.
Its flagship project, Nand Ghar, has established over 630 modern anganwadi centres across Odisha to support women and child development. The company also promotes economic empowerment through the Subhalaxmi Cooperative, which provides livelihood opportunities to more than 5,000 women in Jharsuguda district.
