IMD Issues Orange Alert for Thunderstorms and Strong Winds in 7 Odisha Districts Tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for several districts of Odisha for tomorrow, indicating the possibility of severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds.

According to the IMD bulletin, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph are very likely to occur during the afternoon and evening hours at one or two places over the Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Gajapati districts. These districts have been issued an orange warning.

The IMD has also issued yellow warnings for the rest of the state. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph are likely in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Ganjam districts.

Meanwhile, districts including Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Nabarangapur may experience thunderstorms with winds of 30-40 kmph.

People in the orange warning districts have been advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions, as gusty winds may cause damage to loose structures, trees, and electric poles. Farmers and outdoor workers have been asked to remain cautious during the afternoon and evening hours. The IMD has urged citizens to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to stay updated with official weather bulletins.

On May 16, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching up to 40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon or evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon or evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. These districts are under yellow alert.

For May 17, IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph) in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. These districts have been issued a yellow warning.

According to IMD’s prediction for May 19, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. These districts are under yellow alert.
