Bhubaneswar: Odisha is facing ongoing heatwave conditions, as the IMD announced on Monday that hot and humid weather is expected to persist in various parts of the state for at least the next four days.
In its evening bulletin, the IMD’s Bhubaneswar center indicated that hot and humid conditions are anticipated over districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati on Tuesday.
Tuesday night is expected to be warm in Angul, Kandhamal, Sundargarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur districts, the report added.
Heatwave conditions are projected to continue in Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts for the next three days, according to the bulletin.
The weather report revealed that 14 locations in the state recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher.
Titlagarh in Bolangir district was the hottest, reaching 42.5 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Jharsuguda at 42.4 degrees Celsius. Talcher recorded 42 degrees Celsius, Bolangir 41.8 degrees, Angul 41.7 degrees, and Bhawanipatna 41 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures hovered between 40 and 41 degrees in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Subarnapur, Boudh, Paralakhemundi, Nuapada, Rourkela, and Hirakud during the day, as per the bulletin.
The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded temperatures of 35.7 degrees Celsius and 36.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In response to the heatwave conditions, the Ganjam district administration has declared a holiday for schools from April 21 to 23. However, examinations will proceed as scheduled, according to an order from the district collector.
The Cuttack district collector has also announced holidays for all anganwadi centers, schools, and colleges during the same period, with college examinations to be held as planned. Additionally, the Kendrapara district collector has mandated morning classes for school and anganwadi students.
Heatwave conditions are defined as a period of unusually high temperatures—typically 40 degrees Celsius or more—persisting for at least two days and significantly above normal. If such conditions last for several days, a heatwave is officially declared.
