Bhubaneswar: Jharsuguda became India’s hottest city on Wednesday. The western Odisha industrial town recorded a maximum temperature of 44.6°C. This is the highest temperature reported anywhere in the country this summer. Data from the IMD confirms Jharsuguda topped the national heat list.

Jharsuguda is followed by Akola and Wardha in Maharashtra at 43.6°C, Amraoti (43.4°C), Daltonganj (43.4°C), Yeotmal (43.4°C), Jamshedpur (43.3°C), Bankura (43.2°C), and Prayagraj/Ghoopur and Sambalpur in Odisha (43.2°C) are among India’s 10 hottest places on Wednesday, said the IMD.

Last year, Jharsuguda was also the country’s warmest place. On April 22, 2025, it reached 46.2°C. The sharp rise in heat kept streets empty during the afternoon. “Jharsuguda has faced severe heat for several days,” said a local, living in Badmal locality of the town. “The intensity started early this morning,” he added.

The local weather department has issued a heatwave warning for several districts in Odisha. As per the prediction, heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail in the districts of Balangir, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur until April 24.
