Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to face scorching heat beginning April 16, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Tuesday that sultry weather conditions persist in coastal regions. The state is expected to see a gradual increase in daytime temperatures by 2-4°C over the next three days.
The midday bulletin noted a north-south trough extending from south Assam to south Tamil Nadu, influenced by a cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and adjacent Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and interior Karnataka, which may lead to thunderstorm activity in the state.
The weather agency has predicted hot and humid conditions in isolated areas across districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati until April 20. A yellow warning for heatwave conditions has been issued for Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sonepur on April 16; for Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, and Kandhamal on April 17; and for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balangir, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, and Kandhamal on April 18.
On April 19, heatwave conditions may affect isolated areas in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Angul, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. The warning will remain in effect for Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Boudh, and Angul on April 20.
Thunderstorms, along with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, are expected to begin in the afternoon or evening hours starting April 17. Warnings have been issued for one or two locations in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore on April 17; Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on April 18-19; and Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on April 20.
The IMD has indicated that no significant changes in weather conditions are expected thereafter.
