Odisha Prepares for Intense Heatwave: Temperatures Expected to Reach 42°C Today, Kalbaisakhi Storms May Provide Temporary Relief

As summer intensifies in Odisha, residents are facing a week of extreme heat. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning that daytime temperatures will reach 42°C starting today, with an additional rise of 2-3 degrees anticipated over the next 4-5 days. In western and interior districts, temperatures could exceed 44°C by May 17, making daily life increasingly challenging.

The latest forecast indicates that districts such as Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, Titlagarh, Balangir, and Bhawanipatna will experience the highest temperatures, ranging between 40°C and 42°C this week. Coastal regions are not exempt; while temperatures may remain between 35-38°C, high humidity will exacerbate the discomfort.

On a positive note, afternoons are expected to bring Kalbaisakhi, the dramatic pre-monsoon thunderstorms characterized by lightning, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. Although these storms may provide temporary relief from the heat, they also pose risks, including lightning strikes, crop damage, and strong winds that could uproot trees or damage property. The Centre has issued a yellow warning for Kalbaisakhi across 23 districts, with western Odisha likely to experience the most severe weather.

In the past 24 hours, the state has recorded above-normal rainfall, but the heatwave is far from over. Dr. Rajashree from the Regional Meteorological Centre stated, “In the coming days, Kalbaisakhi may bring some respite in certain places, but overall the heatwave conditions will continue. Citizens are urged to stay alert and follow official advisories.”

Safety measures are crucial: The Meteorological Centre has strongly advised individuals, particularly children, the elderly, and those with health concerns, to avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm. Farmers are also encouraged to take extra precautions to safeguard their crops. Health officials recommend staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, lemon water, and ORS.

With temperatures expected to peak mid-week and thunderstorms on the horizon, Odisha is navigating a precarious balance between extreme heat and stormy relief. Residents are advised to remain indoors during peak hours, keep water accessible, and monitor the weather closely.
