21-Year-Old Arrested for Online Harassment via Fake Profiles in Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda Cyber Police have taken a 21-year-old man into custody for allegedly creating fake Instagram profiles in the name of a young woman and posting obscene content along with threatening messages.

The suspect, identified as Chitrasen Meher alias Chaitu, was arrested in Balasore district on Wednesday.

According to police reports, the victim, who resides in the Rengali area of Jharsuguda, discovered on May 23 that her photos had been edited and used to create five fake Instagram accounts. These accounts featured obscene language and sent her threatening messages, prompting her to file a written complaint at the Jharsuguda Cyber Police Station.

Following the complaint, police registered Case No. 15/2026 on May 24 under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act. Investigators performed a technical analysis that traced the origin of the fake accounts. Digital evidence confirmed Meher’s involvement, leading to his arrest.

Jharsuguda SP G.R. Raghavendra stated that the accused was presented in court after his arrest and indicated that further investigations are ongoing to determine if others were involved in the crime.
