Odisha Implements Early Summer Break Amid Intensifying Heatwave

The Odisha government on Friday announced an early summer vacation for all schools across the state in light of the ongoing heatwave conditions. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated that all educational institutions will close from April 27.

This decision comes as temperatures have sharply risen across several districts, prompting the government to prioritize the safety and well-being of students. Officials indicated that the early closure is a precautionary measure to protect children from prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Odisha is currently facing an intense heatwave, with various regions recording unusually high temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for six districts—Khordha, Keonjhar, Angul, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Bolangir—advising residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours.

Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for 17 districts due to hot and humid conditions, which further heightens discomfort levels. The weather office has also forecasted thunderstorms and rainfall in six districts, suggesting a potential change in weather patterns in the coming days.

On Thursday, Jharsuguda and Talcher recorded the highest temperatures in the state at a sweltering 44 degrees Celsius. Overall, 24 urban centers reported temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, underscoring the widespread severity of the heatwave. On Friday, many areas in the state also registered temperatures over 43 degrees Celsius.

The extreme weather has significantly disrupted daily life, with residents limiting outdoor activities during the daytime. Health experts have recommended that people stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take necessary precautions, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those working outdoors.

Meanwhile, there are signs of possible relief ahead. The IMD has predicted increased thunderstorm and rainfall activity starting April 26, which could lead to a gradual decrease in temperatures across parts of the state.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to adhere to official advisories as Odisha faces one of the harshest heat spells of the season.
