Jharsuguda: In a significant surprise inspection conducted today at the District Jail, Jharsuguda, police recovered a substantial quantity of prohibited articles and narcotic substances from within the prison premises.
The operation was executed under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Jharsuguda. A special police team meticulously searched the barracks, common areas, inmate belongings, wards, beds, and toilets.
Items recovered during the raid included bidis, tobacco products, gutkha sachets, matchboxes, razor blades, a lighter, ganja (cannabis), narcotic pills, and other contraband materials. All seized items have been confiscated.
The inspection also evaluated overall security arrangements, including CCTV coverage, inmate management, and visitor monitoring systems. The SP issued necessary directions to jail authorities to further enhance security measures and ensure strict adherence to prison rules.
According to sources, the raid was prompted by long-standing inputs regarding the illegal entry of narcotics and other banned items into the jail, allegedly facilitated by some unscrupulous staff members. Police have indicated that a detailed inquiry will be conducted into how these prohibited substances were smuggled inside despite existing security protocols.
Jharsuguda Police has reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of security in correctional institutions and preventing any unlawful activities within jail premises.
Speaking about the operation, the Superintendent of Police stated that a thorough investigation will be carried out to identify how the narcotic substances were smuggled into the jail, and strict action will be taken against all those found involved—whether inmates, staff, or outsiders.
