Man Arrested for Online Harassment of Woman

Jharsuguda: Jharsuguda police apprehended a cyber offender in Supaul district of Bihar for establishing a fraudulent social media profile aimed at harassing a woman. The suspect is charged with circulating obscene media, criminal intimidation, and infringing on the victim’s privacy.

The police at the Cyber Crime and Economic Offences Station initiated a case after the woman reported that an unidentified individual had created a fake Instagram account using her obscene photos as the profile picture. The accused persistently harassed and intimidated the victim by sending obscene images and videos, issuing threatening messages, and contacting her from multiple mobile numbers, resulting in significant mental distress.

During the investigation, Jharsuguda police collected digital evidence, obtained records from Meta Platforms, and analyzed call detail records (CDRs) and subscriber information to trace the operation back to Bihar. A police team then traveled to Supaul district and arrested the accused, Md Rashid (20), from Sonak village in Bihar.

The accused has been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000, for cyber stalking, criminal intimidation, privacy violations, and transmitting obscene material electronically.

Jharsuguda police reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding women and ensuring a secure online environment. They stated that strict legal measures will be enforced against individuals involved in cyber stalking, online harassment, the distribution of obscene content, and crimes that undermine the dignity and privacy of women.
