Jharsuguda: Police have dismantled a scheme involved in the illegal production of diesel exhaust fluid in Jharsuguda district, resulting in the arrest of eight suspects, including one from Rajasthan and another from Chhattisgarh. Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is utilized in modern diesel vehicles to reduce harmful emissions by converting nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team executed a raid at Siriabagicha on Friday, seizing large quantities of DEF, suspected adulterants, and urea, along with equipment and two vehicles, according to Jharsuguda SP G R Raghavendra.
“Considering the technical and regulatory aspects, we involved the officers from the industries, agriculture, and other relevant departments to verify the authenticity, source, and legal use of the seized materials and machinery,” he stated. The SP indicated that the suspects were allegedly mixing urea with water and packaging the product in containers labeled with various automobile brands for distribution across Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Seven individuals were apprehended at the scene, while the mastermind of the operation was captured in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The officer noted that further investigations are ongoing.
The SP urged all vehicle owners, transport operators, fuel tank dealers, and farmers to remain vigilant against the use of illegal DEF and the diversion of subsidized agricultural urea for this purpose. Raghavendra mentioned that the counterfeit DEF production network extends into Chhattisgarh. The police have also advised vehicle owners and transport companies to be cautious, as improper use of diesel exhaust fluid could lead to significant engine damage.
