Travelers Urged to Check Train Status as Major Disruptions Loom Next Month

As summer travel plans take shape with schools closing and leave being approved, passengers may need to reassess their journeys due to upcoming changes from Indian Railways. Despite confirmed reservations, it is crucial to check train statuses before heading to the station next month to avoid inconvenience caused by cancellations or rescheduling.

According to railway sources, a large-scale ‘mega block’ is set for June, resulting in the cancellation of approximately 77 trains. This includes alterations to several superfast services, such as Duronto trains, along with delays and rescheduling of multiple services.

While this announcement may cause concern, former railway officer VK Gupta clarified that such cancellations typically relate to necessary infrastructure work. He explained that major maintenance or development projects often necessitate these decisions for operational reasons.

The current mega block is aimed at maintenance and expansion associated with the construction of a fourth railway line at Champa station in the Bilaspur Railway Division. This will involve non-interlocking work, track laying, and signaling upgrades, leading to halted or diverted trains on the affected route.

Although officials assert that the long-term goal is to enhance train speed and reduce delays, passengers should prepare for short-term disruptions.

Several states are expected to experience the impact of this mega block, including:

  • West Bengal
  • Maharashtra
  • Gujarat
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Jharkhand
  • Odisha

Travelers from or through these states should exercise caution when planning their journeys.

A detailed breakdown of the disruptions includes:

  • Total cancellations: 77 trains
  • 65 express and superfast trains
  • 12 local passenger trains
  • Route diversions: Approximately 8 major trains
  • Short termination: 6 trains will conclude their journeys before reaching their final destinations
  • Timing changes: Multiple services will have revised departure and arrival times, potentially extending journey durations.

Among the affected express trains are several key long-distance services, including:

  • Tatanagar-Bilaspur Express
  • South Bihar Express
  • Ahmedabad-Howrah Express
  • Howrah-CSMT (Mumbai) Express
  • Hatia-Pune Express
  • Puri-Jodhpur Express
  • Okha-Shalimar Express
  • Kamakhya-LTT (Mumbai) Express
  • Gaya-LTT Express
  • Udaipur-Shalimar Express

Additionally, various MEMU and local services will be cancelled, impacting daily commuters, workers, and small traders.

The disruption will also affect premium trains like the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express, CSMT-Howrah Duronto Express, and Gyaneshwari Express, which will now operate via Raipur, Titlagarh, and Jharsuguda instead of the Bilaspur-Champa corridor. Passengers should expect delays due to these longer alternative routes and are advised to carry sufficient food and water as usual station stops may differ.

Passengers are encouraged to take the following precautions:

  1. Check Train Status Before Leaving: Always verify your train’s running status before heading to the station using:
    • NTES
    • IRCTC website
    • Where is My Train
  2. Understand Refund Rules:
    • Full refunds will be issued if Indian Railways cancels the train.
    • Online bookings will be refunded directly to the original payment method.
    • Counter ticket holders must return tickets at the station for reimbursement.
  3. Keep Alternatives Ready: If your train is cancelled and travel is urgent, consider:
    • Tatkal bookings
    • Bus services
    • Flights
    • Alternative train routes

For last-minute updates or changes, passengers may contact the railway helpline number 139. While the mega block may cause temporary inconvenience, authorities emphasize that the work is essential for strengthening rail infrastructure and enhancing long-term efficiency. Travelers planning journeys in June are strongly encouraged to stay informed regularly to avoid last-minute surprises.
